Malta-flagged Yacht Captain Fined €90,000 for Illegal Anchoring in Protected Corsican Waters

A captain of a Maltese-flagged 37-metre superyacht has been fined €90,000 and prohibited from navigating in French waters for three years after illegally anchoring within a protected marine area off the coast of Corsica.

The first-instance ruling, delivered by the Maritime Court of Marseille, relates to an incident that occurred in July 2025, when the yacht Laurie I was found anchored in a prohibited zone within the Cap Corse and Agriate Marine Natural Park. The area is protected to safeguard Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows, one of the Mediterranean's most important marine ecosystems.

Environmental inspectors, alerted by a member of the public during a routine patrol, discovered the yacht anchored directly above the protected habitat. Following the inspection, the captain was cited and the case was referred to the French judicial authorities, ultimately leading to the recent conviction.

The case highlights France's increasingly stringent approach to protecting its marine environment. Since 2019, the Cap Corse and Agriate Marine Natural Park has implemented anchoring regulations as part of the wider Mediterranean Anchoring Strategy, designed to minimise damage caused by large vessels to Posidonia seagrass. These underwater meadows play a vital role in supporting marine biodiversity, stabilising the seabed and absorbing significant amounts of carbon, yet they can take decades to recover once damaged by an anchor.

As environmental regulations continue to evolve across the Mediterranean, yacht owners, captains and operators must ensure they fully understand local anchoring restrictions before entering protected waters. Non-compliance can result in substantial financial penalties, operational restrictions and reputational damage.

At UNICO Yachting, we understand that yacht ownership extends well beyond brokerage.
